Advanced Apprenticeship in Sporting Excellence (AASE)

We are now recruiting for a player intake for September 2008. If you are aged 16 to 18, are currently in secondary education, have a passion for tennis and wish to fulfil your potential in this sport then the AASE Scheme could be for you.

The AASE Scheme, supported by the LTA, gives you the chance to join a squad of players in your area, get 12 hours of free high quality training per week, whilst continuing your education.

The qualifications which can be gained include an NVQ (3) in Achieving Excellence in Sporting Performance, Tennis UKCC Level 1 and 2 in Coaching, Communication Key Skills Level 2 and Application of Number Key Skills Level 2.

On completion of the scheme, you may be able to advance to higher education in UK universities, gain a tennis scholarship at a university in the United States or embark on a career in professional tennis as a coach or player.

The scheme is fully endorsed by the LTA. It is also funded by the LTA and Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Details about the AASE for Tennis scheme

The scheme will comprise of three elements, the first being the Level 3 National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) in Achieving Excellence in Sport Performance in Tennis.

The NVQ is made up of eight units related to tennis where you will be required to plan, develop and manage technical and tactical skills, physical conditioning, attitudes and mental skills. There are also units which cover career, communication, lifestyle plus health and safety.

The second is the Technical Certificate which comprises of 780 hours over two years of studying AS/A2 Level, AVCE, BTEC National Diploma.   Additional LTA coaching qualifications will be provided as part of the programme and automatically count towards your technical certificate.

The third is Key Skills in Application of Number and Communication.  This will be built into the NVQ level 3. (Please note that if you have achieved grade C or above in English and Maths, you will be exempt from this component).

After a successful first year of piloting the scheme across 13 high performance centres and with 67 players enrolled we now have a further 5 high performance centres running the scheme from September 2007.

The LTA AASE accredited centres listed here will be taking candidates for the 2007/2008 academic year.
 
Minimum Entry requirements: You should have an LTA Rating of 6.1 or better and be completing GCSEs in June 2007 with the intention to continue further education with AS/A2 Level, AVCE or BTEC National Diploma. N.B. The scheme managers of AASE accredited centres will have the right to make the final decision on candidate selection.
