Individualised Coach Development Programme

Since April 2006 tennis coaches have been given access to a new mentoring scheme enabling them to receive training and advice, near their home club environment, from one of a team of expert tutors.

Mandy has successfully trained 15 coaches on the ICDP programme since it commenced in 1996. Coaches from Essex, Herts and recently Cornwall have worked on a variety of training  needs including:

Mental skills training for performance players, LTPD, Technical and Tactical coaching, Motion Expert, Club and Player Programmes, Qualification preparation including the CCA and PCA.

The new scheme gives coaches the chance to opt for a more individualised and personal approach to their training and development.

A team of 17 of the UK’s top coaches and coach educators has been accredited to deliver the scheme. The team of tutors has a high level of expertise and all meet the criteria that have been set by the coaching department. The tutors will be able to help coaches in all areas of coaching, player development and programme development.

Coaches that wish to take up this opportunity can contact one of the tutors direct to initially discuss and then take up a place. It is a 12-month programme consisting of visits to your club and study programmes in between those visits.

The Individualised Coach Development Programme is an exciting and significant development in the training of existing coaches in the UK. It will allow coaches to follow an individual learning path which is relevant to the coaching work they do on a day-to-day basis.

Alistair Higham, National Manager of Coach Development

Once a coach commits to the scheme with one of the tutors they will:

• Have three two-hour visits per year from the tutor to their club. The visits will consist of on-court work and discussion. Ideally the on-court session would be a live coaching situation involving the coach’s pupils.

• Have agreed action plans and work programmes set out to complete in between each meeting. The work programmes will consist of courses, distance learning, practical experience and awareness of standards visits.

On completion of the 12-month process the tutor will be able to award the coach 15 Coach License credits in recognition of the work that they have done. These credits are for the three meetings and for completion of the work programmes. The scheme recognises that experiences are just as significant as courses in shaping a coach’s skills.

The scheme starts and is driven by a personal profile. The tutor will send the coach a form to complete prior to the first meeting to start this process and by the end of meeting one a list of goals will be in place for the forthcoming year. These goals will revolve around the coach’s business, club programme and players. A second set of goals will then be developed; these are the coaching skills and knowledge that the coach needs to develop in order to achieve the initial goals.

Individualised Coach Development Programme

The scheme has already been successfully piloted in several of the High Performance Centres. County Development Officers also have the opportunity to use the scheme to help targeted coaches.

Any coach that is DCA and above can apply to one of the tutors to be involved in the scheme. It may be particularly relevant for coaches that are:

• Applying for a License for the first time

• Looking to re-energise their coaching and their coaching programme

• Preparing for their next coaching qualification

• Retaking a coaching qualification

The scheme has been initiated by the LTA, but it will be operated privately by the tutors. Coaches wishing to follow the scheme will need to contact one of the tutors directly and arrange payment with that tutor. It will undoubtedly be more cost effective if three or four coaches get together for four individual sessions on the same day.
