Mandy Franks Profile (LTA Tutor)

Mandy was voted LTA Coach of the Year 2001 for training the first ever back to back British 18u and 16u male player. Mandy has coached three 18u and 16u British players to championship titles and many players with national and international rankings. She has played sport to a high level including numerous representations for Herts at County week and county cup, satellite circuit experiences and represented England at hockey.

Mandy set up and developed the first LTA/ITI tennis development and outreach programme in the UK as joint TDO and Head Pro at Batchwood, St Albans in 1988. This led to working on behalf of the LTA to train a further 14 ITI TDO's and assist in the design and implementation of their programmes. She then initiated Batchwood to become the first performance LTA centre/club and recently one of the first four LTA/High Performance Centres.

Mandy has travelled extensively to international junior and senior tournaments and her work involves developing young talented players from mini tennis into promising performance players. She has trained national age group winners and players who have achieved top 100 junior ITF rankings and then transfered to the WTA and ATP tour.

Mandy has tutored for eighteen years and currently tutoring at all levels of the LTA tutoring spectrum including the PCA Award, CCA, DCA, Level 1, CDC, CTS and ITS programmes. Recently, Mandy has trained extensive numbers of coaches on the LTA Individualised Coach Development Programme. Mandy has also lectured in Sports Science and Physical Education at Brunel University part-time for five years, taught at a primary and secondary school for 3 years and worked on behalf of the ITF in the middle east.

Specialist areas of knowledge include sports psychology, technical and tactical training, designing and implementing development and performance programmes, mentoring players to develop winning match play methods and mentoring coaches in the workplace.

Liz Jones Profile (LTA Tutor)

Liz comes from a tennis playing background, having achieved a top 100 WTA senior ranking and being ranked 10 in the world as a junior.  She competed at both junior and senior level at the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open.  She understands the effort and requirements to compete at a high level in world tennis as a performer.  Liz also was part of the American Collegiate system and played at the University of Miami (ranked No 2 in NCAA at the time).

In 2001 she was voted LTA coach of the year for her training and development of young junior players onto National champion standard.  Liz has travelled extensively to international junior and senior tournaments taking players to Europe, North and South America, and Asia. Her work involves developing young talented players from mini tennis into promising performance players.  At the centre along with the rest of the coaching staff she has been fortunate enough to train national age group winners and players who have achieved top 100 junior ITF rankings.  Liz has also taken those players onto the WTA and ATP tour.  Liz is also an LTA tutor and mentor, she has tutored on DCA and CCA courses.  Prior to moving into tennis full time Liz gained a teaching degree in Physical Education and taught at Beaumont School in St. Albans, followed by completing a masters degree in Sports Science at Brunel University.

Jenny Thomas Profile (LTA Tutor)

From a tennis playing background which led Jenny to represent Northumberland, Hertfordshire and Wales, she became a Registered Professional tennis coach and left her teaching career to pursue one in coaching.

She spent twelve years as Director of Tennis at Queenswood School an opportunity which gave her a vast range of experiences within the sport. At the same time she held the part time position of County Coach and Development Officer for Hertfordshire, and in 1996 she left Queenswood and became their first County Performance Officer, a role she held for four years.

In 2000 Jenny took up her present position as a tutor for the LTA, her role involves the delivery of DCA and relevant short courses; Jenny has also delivered on the CCA and TDA. She is also a tutor for ScUK, particularly on their multi skills courses. Jenny has a detailed knowledge and understanding of the development of players at the fundamental stage, especially at performance level. Linked with this is the work she has done in the field of Talent Identification.

Jenny has an understanding of the requirements for players to play at a high level in all of the performance areas, as this was part of her brief as a CPO. Jenny’s background gives her a vast experience in the principles of teaching and their application to tennis coaching. Jenny can help coaches put theory into practice and improve the quality of their delivery.  Employment at Queenswood and  Herts LTA gave her an understanding and experience of developing coaching programmes and all that is required to ensure their smooth operation with regard to coaches, parents, volunteers and official bodies.

Nigel Long Profile (LTA Tutor)

Nigel is a PCA coach and began his coaching career in the UK in 1990 after four years in the US.  He has run Totally Tennis in Basingstoke, Hampshire for the past 17 years initially starting with four outdoor park courts and expanding to include three centres and ten indoor courts.

He has worked with and produced numerous national players as well as developing and mentoring a coaching team that includes PCA,CCA and DCA coaches. He is an LTA Tutor and has written and delivered many LTA resources and courses. 

Nigel has presented at BTCA, Welsh and Scottish conferences and was USPTR Pro of the Year and LTA Coach of the Year finalist. Running an ITI and developing an extensive outreach programme including over 75 schools has provided a wealth of experience of the everyday problems coaches face.

Nigel’s areas of expertise include mentoring and developing coaches and leaders Player development from mini tennis through to adult coaching and performance players up to 14. How to run club sessions including drills, large groups and squad training. Centre management including marketing, programming, finance, contracts, working with local authorities, PDMs and County Sports Partnerships. Schools programming, coaching, competition, mentoring of teachers both at primary and secondary school level.

Alison Allard Profile (Leaders Course Tutor)

Alison is an ICA qualified licensed coach and chairman of the BTCA Herts and a member of the National executive. Alison has been part of the successful Batchwood and Harpenden Development Teams for 10 years. During that time she has gained a wealth of experience coaching adults and children of all ages and abilities. She puts this experience into good effect with the young leaders course by bringing to life the field reality they are going to experience.
